Things to Think About on a Friday Night.....

Busy day here at the GrumpyUnk Command and Control Bunker.
It is that time of year though and that's to be expected.

I bought the piping for the woodstove chimney today. OUCH!
That shit is pricey but damn if it won't be nice to have that heat next winter.
The installation will be a lot of fun I'm sure and the Insurance agent says I have to have it checked off, "By a professional" in order for them to be satisfied. Just so happens that a friend of mine meets the criteria for that and he's going to help me with the installation.
It'll cost me a bit but that's ok. At least I'll know it's done correctly and all that.

As far as "Things to think about" goes, here's a couple of items I noticed today.

Dems spark alarm with call for national ID card Aren't these the same people that have been all having the Vapors lately over the Arizona bill regarding Illegal Aliens?

Sweet! Unelected And Unaccountable Department To Have Your Bank Records Oh hell yes. It's not like they are into our business enough yet. I'm sure all that shit will be safe too.

Unlike that Asshole Bush with Katrina, the Obama Administration didn't dick around for eight days in the face of a major crisis in Louisiana and the gulf.

Oh wait.........My bad. Maybe his white half hates black people. Like Bush was accused of.

You're doing a heckuva job, Barry
"The Obama Regime's pathetic response to the Gulf oil spill has one of three causes--gross incompetence, apathetic negligence or political malice. Given the regime's "baby duckling" approach to every bad news item it has encountered so far, incompetence is hard to rule out. The people in charge are, literally, acting as if this is the very first time an oil spill has threatened the US shoreline."

La. National Guard prepares to fight oil spill
"Obama reassured Gulf Coast communities that the federal government is "fully prepared" to meet its responsibilities to them as the spill gets worse."
Damn, I'll bet that makes 'em feel better.

Attorney General Holder Dispatches Justice Department Team to Monitor British Petroleum Oil Spill
Lawyers. After eight days of spanking the puppy, Holder decides that "We should send some lawyers down there. That'll help!"

It's gonna be interesting to see how the Media spins the obvious incompetence of this bunch.

Baby Holstein Strikes Again.......

The wife had to go into town this morning and left me in charge of the little CrumbSnatcher I call, Baby Holstein.

Believe me, that's an entirely appropriate name for this kid.
And sure enough, she lived up to it not 30 minutes after the wife hit the door.

It shouldn't be possible that a kid this small can generate that much poop in one shitting.
Blew out the Pamper, down both legs and feet. Poop on the floor. Poop on me. Poop everywhere.

I worked on farms as a kid and know what cowflop is like and damn if this kid, pound for pound, couldn't put an adult Holstein to shame.

Loser.
Piker.
Underachiever that let a 1 year old girl outclass you.

But hey, she certainly seemed to enjoy the whole experience!

Me? Not so much. Fortunately, I don't get left alone with the kid to often but I do wonder if she saves it up just for me.

Some Monday Night Music.........

I've had these here before but this is the mood I'm in right now.

I'm beginning to really like these guys a lot.

Another Gratuitous Picture For Ya-
My awesome yard helper. Ya can't even see the bracelet the court made her wear in this picture.

I Always Get a Laugh...........

When I hear someone say that life in the country is "Boring".

I suppose it may seem that way to folks who don't actually live in the country.
My usual response to the "It's Boring" folks is this - "If you think it's boring, go cut yer own firewood sometime."

Nothing ever boring about chainsaws and dropping multi-ton trees.
At least it ought not get boring. Bad Shit can happen in a heartbeat and that can seriously screw up your day, even if you are paying attention.

Which is sorta what happened today.

There was a big ass Poplar tree that needed to come down out back of the house. It had some obvious rot on the one side and was big enough, that if it decided to fall the wrong way it could do some serious damage to the GrumpyUnk Command and Control Bunker.

I've been putting this job off because that tree is so
Damn Big.
But I really couldn't put it off any longer, Summer storm season coming and all. So off I went this morning.

I've never dropped a tree as big as this thing before and I wanted to make sure the damn thing went in the right direction when it did, so I started out by making a big ass notch. It seemed that most of the rotten area was in the notch area as I was cutting and I figured that was a good thing. I took my time and made sure things were done right.

Conditions were perfect. Not even a hint of a breeze and that was good as I was dropping it toward the West, the way the wind generally comes from around here.

So I start making my felling cut ......... And that's when things took an unplanned turn.

Seems that the wood in there was a lot less solid than I thought.
I was just getting close to the point where it was gonna let go when the whole friggin' tree just sorta squatted straight down. Of course the saw is pinched in there tight as a drum, but that was the least of my worries.

Oh sweet, Jeebus! Now what do I do?
Here I am with this huge tree, basically balancing like a pencil on a tabletop.

First thing was to move my dumbass out of the way and hope that the wind didn't pickup all of a sudden.

I figured I would have to influence it to go over somehow, so out to the barn I went. Grabbed the extension ladder and the heavy ass rope. On trip 2 I grabbed the come-along, a metal T post and the post driver.

The scary part was putting that ladder up against the tree and going up to loop a rope around there.

Believe me, my "Pucker Factor" was into Warp 9 level by this time and my ass cheeks were clenched so tight, you couldn't have pulled a Banjo String through my ass with a Caterpillar Tractor at that point.

I just kept saying, "Oh please, don't get any wind now."

I can't even tell you how happy I was to get the hell off of that ladder
.
I pounded in the T post, hooked the come-along to it and tied the rope on tight and started cranking.

Now that rope was only about 25' up the bole of that tree. Not nearly enough for optimal leverage, but Hot Damn, Skippy it was enough.

It took more time to get the slack out of everything than it did to actually start that tree falling.
But it let out one loud Crack !!!! And down she came, right where I wanted it too in the first place!

Turns out there was practically nothing beyond the first 3"-4" of the exterior that was all that solid.

Damn. Good clean living pays off once in awhile.

After it was on the ground, I paced it off and the damn thing was 85-90' tall when it was standing up.
Like I said, a big-ass tree.

I got most of it topped out and cut up this afternoon. The hard part starts tomorrow when I go after the bole of this thing. This is gonna be a real treat trying to section this thing into manageable pieces and then stacking them somewhere to dry.

Well, they say hard work never killed anyone. Scare the hell out of ya when it doesn't go right maybe.

I have several other Big-Ass Trees that need to come down too. It may be awhile before I tackle another one that size.

Besides, I may have maxed out my Good Karma points for now.

It's wet as hell here still so not much gardening gonna get done today.

I have some lumberjacking that needs done so I'm gonna be out trying not to saw my friggin' legs off while taking down some trees.

Another Exciting Saturday............

Here at the "GrumpyUnk Command and Control Bunker". Today I'll be in the trenches at the ER saving lives and raising the standard of living and all that.

Like I told ya the other day, posting is gonna continue to be light until the garden and all is in. Sorry about that.

Here's a few links to check out today.

Via Motorcycle Classics Magazine comes this - 11 New 1975 Norton Commandos Found in Belgium!

"Here’s something you don’t come across every day: 11 brand new 1975 electric-start Norton Interstate motorcycles, still in the crate and awaiting final assembly! The horde of Nortons came to light recently following the death of the owner of Motoshop Podevyn in Aalst, Belgium. Incredibly, the bikes are just a small part of an even larger collection."

Follow the link in that article and check out all of the shit that's being auctioned off. It's an incredible collection.
Hey, you can still bid on the stuff if you like.

Along those same lines, here's a garage full of cool old cars you might like
This guy is quite the craftsmen and car buff.

This is how I envisioned my brother, Chief being like when he gets to be 80 y/o. Smiling in a garage full of cool shit.

These British Gals show you how it's done when it comes to supporting the troops-
Meet the SWAGs (Service Wives And Girlfriends), whose cheeky naked calendar has raised £26,000 for Help For Heroes

"With only strategically placed guns and tanks to spare their blushes, these charity calendar shots have helped raise £26,000 for injured servicemen and women wounded in Afghanistan and Iraq.

A total of 50 volunteers, all wives and girlfriends of men from the three Armed Services, stripped off to be photographed at bases and training centres in Hampshire. But their modesty was preserved by carefully placed pieces of military equipment."

Oh Sweet Jeebus I Damn Near Forgot........

That today is EARTH DAY!!!!

40th anniversary too.

The rain has gone here but it's still pretty wet out there ............. So it's probably gonna take a gallon of Diesel Fuel to get the "Celebratory Pile of Old Tires" lit up and burning today.

As you can see, last years celebration is gonna be hard to top!

But we've been working on this since last year and I'm pretty sure we're up for the challenge.

Should be a good show
.

Rainy Thursday Morning..........

Not likely to get much done in the garden today.
Things are gonna be a bit slow around here until I get the garden and whatnot up to speed, just so ya know.

If you too are stuck inside today, Here is an excellent Essay for you to read - X 2: How Well Do You Understand Your Rights?

It will take a few minutes to read and is worth the time.
Very informative and great historical background for ya.

It's the type of thing that should be required reading in schools and, most especially, by our congressmen.

A tip of the hat to - Green Mountains Homesteader for showing me the way to this excellent essay.

Here's Something to Build Your Confidence in the Government.........

With all the BS being spouted recently about how anyone who disagrees with the Obama Administration being a "Potential Domestic Terrorist" and Fucking Bill Clinton talking shit about how we are all just little, Tim McVeigh's in waiting last week, I couldn't even think about things like that yesterday.

And so my blood pressure doesn't spike to much I'll just let you read this - Short piece on Waco

One little snippet here. It gets better.

"[T]here is the post hoc justification for the use of CS tear-gas in the raid offered by the US Justice Department and senior Clinton administration officials. The public generally, and even the Congressional hearings, seem to have accepted that the children at Waco were gassed and then died as, in effect, “collateral damage” in the course of a raid aimed at their parents."

Read it and remember that these were the people who's constant mantra was "We're doing it for the children".

And don't think they wouldn't do it to your kids.
Gotta go to work now. You have a good day.

Hey! Here's Some News to Cheer You Up!!!!!!
U.S. military warns of oil production shortage by 2015

"By 2012, surplus oil production capacity could entirely disappear, and as early as 2015, the shortfall in output could reach nearly 10 million barrels per day, While it is difficult to predict precisely what economic, political, and strategic effects such a shortfall might produce, it surely would reduce the prospects for growth in both the developing and developed worlds. Such an economic slowdown would exacerbate other unresolved tensions, push fragile and failing states further down the path toward collapse, and perhaps have serious economic impact on both China and India."

Just what I needed to hear. I've been kinda noncommittal on the whole Peak Oil Theory and haven't made my mind up on it as of yet. It's not like there aren't enough fer sure things to get worried about already.......but when the DoD starts in maybe I ought to wonder?

Gratuitous Picture for a Friday Night-

Maybe I should concentrate on, Big Titted Broads and Beer and not worry about the rest.

Some Garden Stuff Etc.............

Started transplanting the Strawberries today. I got a pretty early start despite having worked till midnight last night.
Darn good thing too.

I only got 2 beds worked in and planted before it started raining. That was probably a good thing as my back is killing me.
Damn, it seems like every year it gets a little harder for the body to keep up with what the brain says I should be doing.
I guess I should be be happy that I can get out there and do anything at all. I see people all the time at work that are younger than me who would be happy to be able to do as much as I do.

Of course they weigh 400+ lbs and ride a scooter around when they go out to WalMart.

One of the good things about getting out and working in the garden is you have lots of time to think while shoveling dirt from from one spot to another.
In my case, I've never been one who was accused of "to much thinking" and maybe it's not such a good idea.
Having said that, it's nice to be out there without a lot of distractions. It's good for your head to be able to just think like that.

I'm a bit behind the power curve this year on things and should have been eating fresh salad things by now but I just haven't been as motivated this Spring.
I didn't start any seeds inside this year and haven't planted any outside yet either. That's sort of unusual for me as I ordinarily would have lots of things started already.
I do miss having a fresh Spinach salad though so I'm gonna have to get in catch up mode next week.

Gotta do my usual weekend shift the next 2 days so Monday is gonna be the soonest I can get going. Let's hope that the weather doesn't go to shit.

Y'all have a good weekend and get out and do something.

YerUnk Got His Ass Kicked Today........
By a Rototiller.

I went after the new/old garden area today with the rototiller. It's been about 6 years since that area has been worked.

Whoo! A lot like work there. But it's done and that's a good thing.

I have a shit load of Strawberry plants that need to be transplanted now.
It's amazing that last year I had about 2 dozen berry plants left over from the old patch. I transplanted them into 2 of the raised beds and nipped the blossoms off so they would set runners.

Worked better than I planned.

There's a shitload of nice plants, in the boxes and all around them too.

Damn things went crazy and spread all over.

Which is a good thing I guess.

I'll have plenty to put in the new area and lots left over to share with a couple of friends.
Speak up if you're close by and would like some, BTW.

About the only thing better than fresh picked Strawberries is a fresh picked Peach. Hopefully I'll get some of them this year too.

Here's the area that kicked my ass today.

Approximately 30x50 feet.

Damn. Doesn't sound like much but it took me 3+ hours to till it completely.
Ran through it lengthwise first and then went across it the other way to make sure it was all done nicely.

See all those leaves there? That will be mulch for later on. That shit is like gold. Keeps the weeds down, holds the moisture in when it gets hot and in the Berry patch will keep the berries off the ground so they don't rot.
I do like straw around berries better than leaves so I may break down and buy a couple of bales to use as mulch.
But leaves will do if you don't have anything else.

Just pile them deep so you get a good solid covering.

And leaves are free. The hell with burning them. Gather them up in the Fall and they will make a great mulch.

I'm behind the curve this year already as far as the garden goes. This has been an absolutely wonderful Spring so far. I really expected we would have more cold or snow so I've been holding off on doing much.

Maybe I was wrong. You never know here in Indiana. We could still get a snowstorm. It's just like that here and everytime I get in a hurry, the weather kicks me in the ass and laughs.

I don't have any real reason to be in a hurry. I didn't start any seeds inside this year. I haven't started any spinach or salad things in the HoopHouse either. I probably should have done that but I'm thinking of doing a major overhaul and move on the HoopHouse and having things inside will only be a problem.

Yeah, I learned a few things about having a HoopHouse last year that I need to correct and I'm thinking that I should move it from where it is and then correct the mistakes.
The Tomatoes I had in there last year got some G-d awful blight and I really can't put any Tomatoes back in there. I will have to clean the shit out of the 2 beds in there now and maybe sterilize the soil with a couple of years of plastic covering everything.

It was that bad. And funky crap like that will hang around and infect crops for years if you keep putting things that are susceptible back in the same ground.

Hell, the Old Testament had rules about crop rotation and laying ground fallow every 7 years just so they could avoid problems.

And it's not like I'm any smarter than that so it's best to just do what has to be done.

But that's all part of gardening. Sometimes things don't go quite how you plan it.
Last year was cold and wet all Summer. The Melons, Peppers and most of the Tomatoes didn't do well at all. The Roma Tomatoes didn't seem to mind that weather at all and we had a ton of them. Gave away a ton more.

Same thing with the Beans. I have 4 types out and all of them produced like crazy.

You just never know and that's part of the fun I guess.
I probably would have gotten a lot more done this year already except I've put over 1000 miles on the BigBluePlasticMotorcycle and you can't complain about that.

Here's a couple pictures of my son, DogBoy and his new Girlfriend sharing a cigarette in that afterglow time-

Damn good looking couple, 'eh?

Check out this fine looking thing.

And if you're wondering? No, it's not Photoshopped.

Nowadays, this veteran would be labeled as a "Potential Domestic Terrorist".

On This Day in 1861........

The Civil War Began when Confederate forces began the bombardment of Fort Sumpter, South Carolina.

Being an observer of news and politics, there have been times in the last few years when I've had to wonder just when the next Civil War is gonna start.
The political & cultural divide in this country is just as great now as it was then and getting larger and more polarized by the day.

It's ironic that the next Civil War in this country is going to be about freedom from slavery too. A bit of an Ass-Backwards twist from 1861, but individual freedom is still gonna be the central issue.

It's a beautiful morning here in YerUnks part of the world and I'm gonna go work in the garden.

Romanian PSL Range Time.........

Went to the range the other day and my friend brought his new PSL Rifle along for Me, My Brother and DogBoy to shoot.

Oh My!!!! YerUnk has a serious lust on for one of these.

Since this thing shoots the same caliber rounds as my old Mosin Nagant Commie Cannons (Light ball only. No heavy stuff.) I brought along a bunch of ammo so he wouldn't have to supply that too.

We all got a chance to shoot quite a bit and quite frankly, this is a damn nice rifle for the price.
These are new production rifles & not parts kit guns.
It's a bit rough around the edges and doesn't have the finish that most of us who shoot AR platforms are used to. But it wasn't sloppy or nasty by any means and nicer than a lot of AK rifles I've seen.

And it's quite accurate. Or at least it's accurate enough for what it's designed for. It's not a true sniper rifle but damn if I'd want to volunteer to stand 600 meters downrange as a target.

I'll concede right up front that both DogBoy and my Brother are both better shooters than I am. My visual problems just make it difficult to be as good a shooter as I'd like to be.

The brother should be better by virtue of both better vision and training.
DogBoy is just a damn natural and could be a superb shot with a bit more training and practice. The Little shit.

The scope on this rifle is nothing fancy but really makes it a lot easier for me to shoot.
I see optics in my future.
It's only a 4 power scope but it helps me immensely. I dicked around with the zero and after only one mag (10 rounds) was able to get hits in a 4" group at 200 yards. I'd be able to tighten that up with 10 more rounds but we were running out of time.

Of course, DogBoy was getting groups of 2" at that same range right off the get go.

Yeah, you can tell he likes it.

BTW, He really doesn't look quite that crazy most of the time.

No really. His inner Jack Nicholson was coming through here is all.

Here he is getting his Simo Häyhä on again.

Yes I know I posted this same picture earlier today, but I needed something to offset the crazy look of that last photo.

Back to the PSL.
The trigger, while not light, wasn't excessively heavy either and broke cleanly.

Overall this is an easy rifle to shoot, is as accurate as it's designed for (which is hitting a man sized target and not a 6" paper circle), cheap to shoot and affordable at only $579 bucks.

I definitely see one of these things in my collection soon.

Buy Now and Beat the Rush!!!!!!!!!!

It was pretty traumatic being ambushed by the Afrika Korps the other day (See post below) and I've been having trouble sleeping ever since.

Well, the answer to all my concerns is now only a really friggin large credit card bill away!!

T72 Tank for sale.

"We are a Russian armoured & surplus military vehicle and dealer. We export Russian T72 Tanks and other Defence equipment.

We offer the rare opportunity to buy a Modern Main Battle Tank, which is currently in front line service with many countries in the World.

The T72 are one of the most modern main battle tanks available to collectors to buy. The vehicles are direct release Army surplus. These Action Vehicles are faster, with better performance than Chieftan or M60 Tanks. They are fitted with reliable V12 diesel engines, and are ideal for off road driving experiance, business promotion,Film and TV hire.

We have Russian T72 Tanks for sale now. This vehicle is in very good condition the vehicle is advertised on Milweb for sale"

Shit. I want this one-

Seriously. Nothing says "Get off my lawn!!!!" quite like that.

And all it takes is a credit line as long as the horizon.

And if that's a bit much for you and your parking space is limited or you want something to impress the folks up at the lake house?
Here ya go!
1943 Volkswagen Type 66 Schwimmwagen. With an MG42 Machinegun mounted on it, this little baby would make an ass kick addition to the home.

"Exactly 15,125 VW Type 166 better known as Schwimmwagen were manufactured during World War II. At the conclusion of the war, all the vehicles that could be found were crushed or used for target practice by the Allied Forces. Consequently only 125 or so examples survive today."

Hell, they only want $200,000 for it.

Personally, for that price, I'd buy several of the tanks instead of this overpriced Volkswagon.
But if money was no object.........

OK, I admit that these 2 items are a bit on the pricey side. Some might even look at them as a bit extreme.
Not to mention all of the potential complications that could arise between you and your liberal friends, family and neighbors.

Here's what I suggest. Buy a couple of cases of the following and keep them around to sooth the ruffled feathers of those who get a case of The Vapors when pulling into the driveway and seeing that 125mm Main Gun from the T72 pointing in their direction.

Canned Unicorn Meat!

Shit. Throw in a couple of bags of Skittles and you'd have 'em eating out of your hand!

And don't forget The Tribbles 'N' Bits breakfast cereal!

Throw these in with the Canned Unicorn Meat and you are good to go.

Well, except with the vegans. But screw them. You shouldn't worry about what anyone who doesn't eat meat thinks anyway.

You Never Know..........

Just what you'll find while riding around in Southern Indiana.

Beautiful day here in S. Indiana.
I was busy cleaning up the old beehive today and stabbed the shit out of myself with the knife I was using to scrape the frames down. Clumsy bastard.

So I figured to hell with anymore of that bullshit and decided to take the BigBluePlasticMotorcycle out for awhile before I die of some God awful infection from the puncture wound I inflicted on my arm.

Ok. I'll probably make it.
As My Old Man used to say - "It's to far from your heart to kill ya. Quit bitchin'."

So off I went after tending my wound.

It's amazing that I still find roads around here that I haven't been on before. At least I think that's so. Never can be to sure with my memory and just maybe this happens more in the Spring after being locked up in the house. Never can be to sure about these things anymore.

Either way it's kind of nice to ride a new road. Even if it only Seems new.

But seriously, the last thing I expected today was to be attacked by the Friggin' Afrika Korps!

I'm way the hell out in BFE, come around a curve and Damn!
Look at that.

Not exactly what I expected to find on a sunny Spring day.

Here's another view. I knew that cellphone would come in handy one of these days!

Since Field Marshall Rommel didn't pop out with a Panzerfaust or anything I had to stop and look.

Whoever owns this also has a US halftrack.

The US track was kinda odd. I crawled up and peaked inside at the production plate. It was made by White Truck and MOS
T of the production plate was in English. But almost everything anywhere else was in French. Including the unit designation on the back. Which I was not smart enough to get a picture of - DOH!!

I guess it was built by the US for French use. No real idea about that, but it's kinda interesting anyway.

So that's my - "There's something you don't see everyday, Edgar." moment for this Spring.

See, if I didn't have a motorcycle I'd never come across this kinda shit.
